Exhibition on Women of Hong Kong – A Century of Contribution and Development

Designed to conclude the Women's Commission's series of activities to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Exhibition on Women of Hong Kong – A Century of Contribution and Development was held from 30 November to 3 December 2007 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.  Consisting of four zones – namely, "Stories of Women", "The First Women in ...", "Key Achievements in Promoting Local Women's Rights and Interests", and "the Cultural Life of Girl-child" – the Exhibition charted the experiences of women in Hong Kong through different periods of time in the 20th century.

The Exhibition was well patronised by the public, and visitors found it informative and educational.  Many schools, women's groups, elderly centres and family services centres also joined the free guided tour service to gain a deeper understanding of women development in Hong Kong.  To maximize the impact of public education, a radio publicity campaign with a series of newspaper articles was also launched around the time of the Exhibition to arouse discussion on topics such as glass ceiling in the workplace and division of familial roles between women and men.  An essay competition was also organised alongside the Exhibition to invite members of the public and students to reflect on gender issues and to express their views after visiting the Exhibition so as to further enhance gender awareness among the public.

After the Exhibition in Hong Kong, the exhibits were delivered to Beijing for display at the China Women and Children's Museum.  The Museum is the first national museum dedicated to women and children in China.

In addition, the Exhibition materials were also duplicated and put on display at Shatin Town Hall, Hong Kong Central Library, Tsuen Wan Town Hall, Hong Kong Museum of History, seven Government Offices and 12 pubic libraries from July 2008 to March 2009.
